Before we begin, I’m sure some of you are wondering, what exactly is a blog?

There are many different answer to this, but basically, a blog is just another type of website, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Thanks Wiki!

If you are already familiar with internet, I’m sure you would have noticed the emergence of many new famous blogs over the years. The birth of blog started in late 2004, and to this date, there are literally millions of blogs out there. From cooking recipe blogs, wedding blogs to bicycle review blogs and such, there are all types of topics covered by blogs.

So the main question is, why do people blog? Why is blogging so popular? What does blogging offers that attracts hordes of people jumping into the bandwagon?

There are a number of reasons why blogging has become such a big hit these days. To list them all would be frankly speaking, too time consuming, so instead, I’m going to list down the top 11 reasons why I started blogging.

1. Blogging Makes Money. And they can make big money without slaving themselves to corporations. There are many ways bloggers make money from their blogs. Ads on sidebars, writing reviews, introducing products and getting sponsors are only some of them. Making money online is an excellent reason to start a blog and is a great advantage of blogging.

2. Blogging Creates New Opportunities. Besides the opportunity to make money online, blogging also provides new career and job opportunities. Inspired writer? Always dream of becoming an entrepreneur? Freelance web designer perhaps?

3. Early Birds Win. Truth be told, blogging success is way easier to achieved back in the early days due to smaller competitions. Good news is, it is still. Though, with thousands of new blogs making its way to the internet every single day, the same may not be said a year later.

4. Blogging Requires Little Startup Capital. There are no other businesses that has little to no startup capital than blogging. Even a run down stall down the street cost a lot more than blogging, yet the opportunity to make money is enormous due to being a new market.

5. Blogging have Little To No Risk. Because of the low startup capital, there’s not much risk involve when it comes to blogging. And the best part, blogging success does not even require you to spend many hours a day.

6. Showcase Your Talent. Blogging is a great platform to showcase your talent and market yourself to the world. There are a lot of freelance writers and web designers that get their own blog to showcase their portfolios. This is a good way to market yourself to the world, and make money.

7. Blogging Helps Build Credibility and Sets You Apart as an Industry Expert. If you’re knowledgeable or have expertise in a certain area (e.g. personal finance), blogging is a great and effective tool to establish yourself as an expert in your subject area. And when it comes to blogging, as long as you have large amount of subscribers, it’s almost a given that you can publish your own book and profit from it for quite some time.

8. Blogs are Search Engine Friendly. It’s no secret that search engines love blogs. Unlike a regular website which is hard to rank well in search engines, blogs are easier to land on the first page of search engines. This is because each post is assigned with an individual URL address, making it easy to focus on a specific topic and keyword. To add further, as blogs tend to be updated regularly, search engines will crawl them often.

9. Blogging Helps You Connect with Your Customer. The best marketers are those that interact with their customers on a personal level. With hundreds of ads shoved into our face each and every day, people tend to get defensive when it comes to ads. With blogging however, selling a product is easy, so long as you are honest in your reviews and recommendations. It’s all about building trust folks.

10. Blogging Improves Your Writing. Want to learn the secret to good writing? Simply make a habit of writing. I know Brian Clark agrees. For your average Joe, what better reason to write than blogging?
