Choosing A Wordpress Theme

A theme is basically a ready made design for your blog. The first step is to decide if you want a free theme, a premium theme (one that you will pay for but will be used by some other blogs as well), or a custom theme (a theme that is designed specifically for you).

There are a couple of qualities you need to pay attention to when it comes to choosing the right theme.

  1. Design. First impression matters. And this is even true for blogs. When it comes having a good design, it does not mean the blog should be colorful or complicated, but reflects the message that the blog is trying to convey. For example, if your blog is about simplicity, you can’t be rocking a complicated design can you?
  2. . In general, a design with either too many colors or have complicated structure should be avoided as it can be both distracting and inconvenient for readers to browse your blog.

  3. Coding. Most new bloggers pay no attention to the coding of their theme. In order to rank well in search engines, coding is vital. A good coding should always enhance a blog’s search engine optimization.
  4. Usability. Like I said earlier, it’s best to avoid complicated designs. Readers accessibility and user experience can be compromised due to complicated and unnecessary design options.
  5. Customizable. A good theme should be flexible to provide greater design possibility, even for beginners.
  6. Support. Does the theme provides support? Some premium themes include support from the designer, which can be a big plus. Some free theme designers provide limited support and some provide none. If you think you might need support somewhere down the road, take this into consideration. If you are familiar with themes and feel comfortable solving your own problems, don’t worry about support.
